The state portal of Punjab includes residents from all over India which means there is a mix cultural population here. However, the majority of population is Sikh with over 60% of the rehabilitation in the territory of the state.

One of the large regions situated in the northern part of India, Punjab’s population statistic apparently indicates that number of applicants seeking marriage registration here are more in comparison to nearby states. Eligible applicants can now register marriage and obtain certificate under the Punjab Compulsory Registration of Marriages Rules, 2013 quite easily through online procedure.

The compulsory marriage registration in Punjab is applicable all over the state and is charged with Rs 140/- as government processing fee and Rs 700/- as Suvidha fee for the wedding registration.

The rules and regulations related to Punjab marriage act were implemented under the supervision of undersecretary of home and justice department. In official communication with deputy and revenue officers, the government has given three months stipulated period after which court fee worth Rs 1500 is applicable for the same.

The date of solemnisation of the marriage is considered for additional fee (if applicable). When applying for marriage registration in Punjab after six months of wedding date then late fee of Rs 1000 is applicable, and a written permission from the district registrar to continue the procedure is required.

Year gap between registration and solemnising date is subjected to sub rule (3) or rule (5) & additional fee of Rs 2000 with charges as specified in the memorandum.

Punjab Marriage Registration Rules

According to Government, the Punjab Anand Marriages Registration Rules, 2016 were declared. Anand marriage means Sikh marriage solemnized commonly by “Anand or Anand Karaj”. To register Anand marriage, Registrar (also known as Tehsildar or a Naib Tehsildar) or Sub Divisional Officer under whose jurisdiction such marriage solemnized are compulsory to be presented at the venue. Rules and regulations of Anand marriage in case of Foreign National (FN), Persons of Indian Origin (PIO), Overseas Citizens of India (OCI), Non-resident Indian (NRI) must be checked priorly.

Verification and registration of Anand marriage is mandatory to issue a Certificate of Anand Marriage in Form-IV by the registrar. During the verification, the identity of the parties and witnesses testifying the solemnization of wedding will be done. Prior marital status will also be testified.

Anand Marriage Register in Form-V can be obtained in both in English and Punjabi languages. Form- I, Form- I A, Form- II, Form- IV & Form- V are applicable for registration (conditions are applicable check marriage rules).

Applicants can apply for registration at the registrar office of the residential area. Eligible applicants should not be less than 18 years for female and 21 years for male. Bride & Groom with under age eligibility can apply for registration with required documents after solemnizing the ceremony.

Documents Required for Punjab Marriage Registration under Hindu & Special Act 1955

  • Application form completed in all respect and signed by both Husband & Wife with all the documents attached with it.
  • Copy of Challan or Fee Receipt if paid in Treasury
  • Separate affidavit in prescribed format from Husband & Wife.
  • A certificate from the priest if marriage was solemnized in a religious place.
  • For Date of birth proofs 10th Class certificate, Date of birth certificate is applicable.
  • For Proof of residence – Voter I-card/Ration card copies are applicable.
  • Carry 6 passport size (2B size) photographs Individually & Two Joint Photographs of marriage.All documents must to be attested by Gazetted Officer.

Marriage Registration Fee in Punjab

Court marriage fees in Punjab is Rs.50/-
Suwidha Facilitation charges are applicable as Rs.700 under Hindu Marriage Act payable as Bank Challan.
Late fee for marriage registration in Punjab is also applicable if the couple is registering marriage after three months’ mandatory period. The late fee charges are Rs 1500 for the delay up to six months. For one year gap Rs. 2000 is applicable.

Prescribed Time Schedule

The Marriage Certificate is issued to the applicant in 30 days. Because verification and documentation work is must be done before granting certificate, the waiting period is 30 days as prescribed by the authorities. The appointment date is then given to the applicant on which rest of the formalities are completed. The date of appointment for registration depends on number of applicants already applied for the procedure. Also, if there is national holiday in between, then the time period may extend as per the national holidays.
